I am wondering if I could substitute 10oz of homemade potato soup instead of canned, Would that also work? There always seems to be just that bit of soup left in the pot when we make it and this would be a great way to use it up.

I made this tonight. It only took about 4 hours for the potatoes to cook on low in my Westbend crock pot. It also has a warm setting, so I kept it on that after about 4.5 hrs. I added a shot of half n half, the ham, some garlic salt, black pepper and a little onion powder.Shredded sharp cheddar cheese on top and real bacon bits about 30 mins before serving. It was good. I think it also might have been good with Russet potatoes.?? I don’t know. Thanks for sharing! My husband liked it best! 🙂

Thank you for letting us know that you liked our recipe! I haven’t tried this recipe using Russet potatoes, the cooking time will probably need to be longer as Russets are a harder potato. If you give it a try with Russets, let me know how it goes!

I made the ham and ranch potatos. I used “Condensed Cream of mushroom soup with roasted garlic.” I also added minced red onion and minced garlic. Then I topped it with real bacon bits. I needed to add milk at the end as well because mine was really thick. It was amazing and extra creamy adding the milk. Everything else was the same. Thanks!

Made this for the first time today, followed instructions but, when I got home and checked(it had been approximately 5 1/2 hours) found it burned. Now the house smells great but I’ve no dinner. Greatly disappointed, my crock pot is a 5 quart size and “not malfunctioning” so all should have been fine. Maybe will try your recipe again when I’m not so frustrated/angry.

      Hi Kristin-

I hate that the recipe cooked faster in your slow cooker than it did ours. I know that can be very frustrating. That is why we say in the post “All slow cookers cook differently, so cooking times are always a basic guideline and should always be tested first in your own slow cooker and time adjusted as needed.” We test every recipe on our site in our slow cookers but unfortunately we cannot predict exactly how your unit’s make/model/year will perform.

Is this like a thick potato soup or mashed potatoes? If you hate cream cheese is there anything you could substitute (maybe heavy cream)?
Looks yummy for an Autumn day!

      Hi Dianna!

It isn’t like a soup or mashed potatoes, it is a creamy, cheesy potato recipe where the potatoes are not mashed. As for the cream cheese, the potatoes don’t taste like cream cheese. Since I haven’t tried it with an alternative, I can’t recommend one. If you try something else and it works let us know! Enjoy!

Hi! I have just added the ham & cheese to this and it seems really dry. I followed the recipe exactly. The recipe called for just the can of soup-I didn’t prepare it as the soup can directions. Is that where I goofed?
I’m wondering if I should add some milk so I have more sauce. I tasted the potatoes before adding the ham & they were YUMMY!
Hope you see this soon as it will be ready shortly….
      THANKS in advance!

      Hi Pat!

You did the soup right, it is just the condensed version. Did you use cream cheese too? If so, I am not sure why they would be dry. I haven’t tried it with adding milk, but it might work. I would recommend adding a very little amount at a time so that you don’t make it too soupy. Enjoy!

FAQs

How long does it take for potatoes to get soft in a crockpot on high? ›

To a 6-quart slow cooker, add the potatoes, olive oil, garlic, and salt, stirring to combine. Cover and cook until the potatoes are tender, about 3 to 4 hours on high, or 5 to 6 hours on low.

What if my ham is too big for my slow cooker? ›

If the ham is too tall to fit completely inside, make a tinfoil hat for it by layering a couple of pieces of tinfoil across the top of your slow cooker and crimping around the edges to completely cover. Lay a dish towel on top of the foil to help keep it weighed down and prevent heat from escaping.

When should I add potatoes to slow cooker? ›

Tender vegetables such as zucchini and beans can be added to your dish in last ¾ - 1 hour of cooking when cooking on High, or 2 hours if cooking on Low. Hard, starchy vegetables like potato and carrots are best added around 3 hours before the meal is done if cooking on High, and 4 hours on Low.

Why are my potatoes still hard after cooking in the crockpot? ›

Insufficient Liquid: If there wasn't enough liquid in the crockpot, it could have caused uneven cooking. Potatoes need to be fully submerged in liquid to cook evenly. Old Potatoes: Very old or stored potatoes can become starchy and may not soften as well during cooking. It's best to use fresh, firm potatoes.

Does ham get more tender the longer you cook it? ›

That's for an eight to 10-pound bone-in ham. Editor's Tip: For a fall-apart tender ham, let it cook longer; 10 to 12 hours on low.

Does ham need to be submerged in slow cooker? ›

Pour in the cola, and make sure the ham joint is submerged in the liquid. Cover and cook on low for 5-6 hours on medium/high. I find that 5 hours is enough in my slow cooker. You want the gammon joint to be cooked through and tender but still retain its shape.

Can you use foil instead of a lid on a crockpot? ›

If you cannot replace a lost or broken crockpot cover, and don't have the funds to buy a new [or used] crockpot, you can use aluminum foil to cover the top. Make sure that you pierce the foil to allow for expansion of the liquid in the ingredients and broth.

How do you soften potatoes in a slow cooker? ›

Transfer the potatoes to the slow cooker (I use a 4.5-quart Crock Pot for reference). Toss with olive oil and seasonings. Cook until fork-tender, about 2 to 3 hours on high or 4 to 6 hours on low.

How long does it take vegetables to soften in a slow cooker on high? ›

Cook covered on high for about 2-4 hours, or whenever the veggies are tender. Check out more vegetarian recipes you can throw in your slow cooker.

Will potatoes go soggy in slow cooker? ›

Yes, it is possible to overcook potatoes in a crockpot. Potatoes can become mushy and lose their shape if cooked for too long. It's recommended to keep an eye on the cooking time and check for tenderness periodically. Once they are fork-tender, it's best to remove them from the crockpot to avoid overcooking.

Why are my potatoes still hard after an hour? ›

If your baked potato is still hard after an hour, it may not have been cooked long enough. Baked potatoes typically require longer cooking times at higher temperatures to ensure they are soft and fully cooked.
