Party Planning Tips for 7 Year Olds
Tip!
Planning the party
While planning the birthday party keep a notebook that you can write down what you might need help with during the party . When friends and / family ask how they can help show them the "help" list and then they can choose an area to help.
If you have the following areas covered by adults or older children during the party you will also be able to enjoy the party!
Pictures
1 or 2 adults that can take pictures of the action.
Cake
Cut and serve the cake after the pictures have been taken.
Ice Cream
Dip ice cream into dishes while the cake is being cut.
Games
Adults or older childrenthat can take over and explain the games to the kids and supervise during game time.
Arts and Crafts
Watch over the birthday activity or art tables and make sure the kids have the supplies they need and offer advice or help when needed.
Secretary
Write down who gifts are from - great help when writing thank you notes!
Melt Down Zone
An adult who can gently remove a child who is cranky or being mean until they can return to the party.
7th Birthday Timeline
Here is a basic timeline for a 7th birthday party.Change this party time line based on the your schedule.Add 30 minutes if you will be serving a meal.
This is based on a party from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
2:00 - Guests Arrive
There will be a short time at the beginning of the party when guests are arriving and it's a good idea to have a simple game or activity that the kids can do while they wait on all the guests to arrive.
Activity tables with color sheets or a fun icebreaker game will help fill this time period and allow the kids to get to know each other.
These are our favorite Icebreaker games:

2:10- Party Games
Before the party decide on several games for the kids to play. Have all the supplies you'll need for each game ready to go so it is easy to switch between games. A good idea is to have 3 or 4 party games (see list below). Have a few adults walk the kids through the rules and demonstrate the games. Always have a few more games ready then you think you will need just in case they move quicker then you planned and you need to fill some time. Don't rush through the games if the kids are having fun. It's okay to only play 2 games if the boys and girls are really enjoying themselves.
2:55 - Activity
7 years olds will love an activity or craft such as painting, creating something that matches the birthday party theme or maybe a Scavenger Hunt!
Decorating cupcakes or cookies is always a fun activity. This is also a good time for entertainment such as a clown, sing-a-long or petting zoo.

3:25 - Presents
Let the birthday child open their presents or they can do this during activity time.
3:40 - Cake, ice cream and singing Happy Birthday!
4:00 - Party end
Have the guests goody bags filled with party favors ready to go as they leave or you can hand them out while the birthday girl / boy opens their presents.
Add 30 minutes to the party if you will be serving brunch, lunch or dinner. With an afternoon party you don't have to serve a meal.
Party Games for 7 year olds
Telephone Game
Have the children sit in a circle for this birthday game. The birthday child goes first and whispers a sentence to the person on their right. That person then whispers what they heard to the next person … and so on. When the message has gone around the circle, the person next to the birthday child tells the message out loud. Then the birthday child tells the original message. Very funny to see how things repeated change! Start game again with the next person.
Treasure Hunt Games
Treasure hunts can be played in many different ways. The main idea of the treasure hunt game is to have the kids hunt hidden treasure by using clues. Several variations of this birthday party game arelisted under our treasure hunt page.
Oversize Birthday Party Game
This big party game let's the kids really get involved! On a patio or driveway draw a large (VERY large!) game board with chalk. Make every square at least 18". Make it in the shape of a circle or oval (or a figure 8). Write "start" at the first square and then on each square write a command or action. Example: Square 2 = move ahead 3 spaces, Square 3 - jump up and down until your next turn, Square 4 = sing the national anthem until your next turn, Square 5 = go back 2 spaces ... and so on until every square is filled.
Make 2 large oversize dice from boxes at least 12 x 12 (the bigger the better!). The pieces being moved around the board are the kids themselves. They roll the dice and then move themselves along the game board. The winner is the one to reach the end space first by landing on it with an exact roll. Kids LOVE this game!
Egg and Spoon Games
Kids race while holding an egg (or use a cotton ball, ping pong ball or other small ball) on a wooden spoon.
The team that has all their players complete the course first wins. Giant Game Silly Racing Games 7 year olds
For a fun variation use a prop from the birthday party theme such as a sword and coins.
Use sidewalk chalk to draw a very large (HUGE!) oversized game board. The game board can be drawn in an oval, circle or figure eight. Make squares on the board that are 18". In the squares, beginning with the start square, write directions that the players have to follow when they land in that square. Some fun ideas are .... Move back 3 spaces, Twirl, Squawk like a chicken, etc. that have to be continually done until their next turn. The players themselves are the playing pieces! You can make two super big dice from square boxes for them to roll during the game.
Holding a blown up balloon in between the heads of team members
Holding blown up balloons between knees
Skipping forwards and then backwards
Balancing a book or other item on their head
Jumping rope and singing a nursery rhyme or happy birthday while they jump
Balancing a little ball on the top of their feet
While bouncing a play ball
Water Relay Games Mystery Fishing Game
You'll need a fishing pole made from a bamboo stick, yarn and a clothespin attached at the end of the pole. You will also need a place for the "fish" to hide while they attach the prizes onto the fishing poles. Use a large decorated appliance box, a blue sheet thrown over a card table or a blue table cloth or sheet hung between walls of a hallway.
Kids will throw their line over into the water and the "fish" attach a prize to their line. Treasure Hunting Game
